Our Story Begins with a Passion to Perform and Showcase Our Tradition

For nearly three decades, the John Wai's Professional Lion and Dragon Performance Team has carried on an authentic tradition rooted in Kung Fu. John began performing lion dance in his early teens, and when he opened his own Kung Fu academy 28 years ago, he continued passing down this art to his students — preserving a legacy that combines discipline, culture, and performance.

There are hundreds of different styles of Kung Fu, and each performs the lion and drumming differently. John’s discipline, Choy Lay Fut, is known for its sharp movements, expressive lion head, and powerful, aggressive beat — a combination that makes each performance dynamic and captivating to watch.

Over the years, the team has performed across the United States and internationally, gaining a reputation for quality, authenticity, and professionalism. During the Lunar New Year season, the team operates like a full-scale production, traveling together in a 50-passenger bus that carries both performers and equipment to shows throughout the region.

Many of the team’s members have been training and performing with John since the beginning, mastering not only the art of Kung Fu but the rhythm, coordination, and unity that bring each performance to life. Their passion and precision are what make the John Wai Professional Lion and Dragon Performance Team one of the most respected performance teams in the country.
